Located on the Aladag Mountains, 5 miles from Ephesus, it is believed that Mary came to Ephesus with St. John in 37 A.D. and lived there until her death in 48 A.D., a claim made during the Third Ecumenical Council in 431 A.D. After its discovery, the Archbishop of Izmir declared it a place of pilgrimage in 1892. Pope Paul VI also visited and prayed at the site on July 26, 1967.

This charming and well-organized museum houses artifacts not only from the ongoing excavations at the Ephesus archaeological site but also from the Cukurici Mound, the Basilica of St. John, and the Temple of Artemis.
