The statues depict Amenhotep III seated on his throne, and each statue stands about 18 meters (60 feet) tall, weighing approximately 700 tons. They were carved out of single blocks of quartzite sandstone and originally placed at the entrance of the pharaoh's temple. The statues were created to guard the temple and to represent the pharaoh's divine power and authority.
