Local legend tells that the hill was once a celestial elephant sent down to earth to rescue the people from devastating floods. After a fierce three-day battle with imperial soldiers who tried to capture it, the wounded elephant was struck down while drinking from the Li River and instantly turned into stone, forever watching over the city.
