Somewhere in the first twenty minutes the engine is loud, and then it isn't. That is usually when people go quiet too - when the lake opens and the water turns a green that does not look real until you are on it.

You spend the whole day on Cheow Lan Lake in a wooden longtail boat driven by a villager who grew up on this water. First the Three Brothers, three limestone peaks standing together so deliberately it looks arranged. Then a cave: the temperature drops as you step inside, and the rock around you catches the light like scattered diamond.

Lunch is on a bamboo raft house floating on the lake. Afterwards, swim, take a kayak out, or do nothing on the deck for a couple of hours. In the afternoon the boat takes you to a forest hidden inside the lake, with a waterfall standing at its entrance like a doorway.

The raft-house food is simple, honest, cook-to-live food. Stops can shift with weather and water level; everything listed happens. Small shared group, never more than 15 guests.
