This experience goes beyond a typical classroom-style workshop by giving you the chance to learn by doing. Instead of just talking through gear and techniques, you’ll practice packing a real backpack and learn to handle essential equipment.
It’s designed specifically for beginners, with a supportive, small-group environment where you can ask questions, build confidence, and leave with a clear understanding of how to plan your first backpacking trip. You’ll walk away not just with knowledge—but with the confidence to actually get out on the trail.
We’ll begin with a gear overview, where you’ll get familiar with packs, tents, and key equipment, followed by a step-by-step demonstration on how to properly pack a backpack for comfort and efficiency. From there, you’ll practice packing your own bag and learn practical tips for staying comfortable and prepared on the trail. We’ll cover key topics like trip planning, safety basics, and what to expect on your first overnight adventure. By the end of the session, you’ll have a clear understanding of how to get started and feel ready to take on your first backpacking trip.
We’ll meet at a scenic park just minutes from downtown Asheville, where your course begins at a shaded picnic shelter surrounded by nature.
