A Day in Accra

He was invited by the first president of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to Ghana to edit an encyclopedia of African history and was given a home to live in with his wife till he passed on. His home is now a Museum known as the W.E.B Du Bois Centre. The centre has instore Dr. Du Bois’ personal belongings, honorary awards and numerous publications in his library on display. His tomb and the cremated body of the wife can be found at the centre as well.

At the square, guests would get to see the independence arc, the black star gate and the monument of Liberation. The site is a very large open space bounded by stands that can seat about 30,000 people. It was built to commemorate the independence of Ghana as symbol of self-reliance and a place of national unity. The space is used to host other national, religious and commercial events like political rallies and entertainment concerts.

It is the final resting place of the first president of Ghana, who liberated Gold Coast from Colonial rule. The museum houses the personal effects and publications of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah at various stages of his life from childhood to his political life till his overthrow and death.
