Chengde, previously known as Jehol or Rehe, is a prefecture-level city in Hebei province, situated 180 km northeast of Beijing. It is best known as the site of the Mountain Resort, a vast royal garden and palace formerly used by the Qing emperors as summer residence since the weather temperature is cool during the summer there (average 24.5°C /76.1°F in July, and the annual mean is 9.11°C/48.4°F). It's the emperor's Summer Palace of the Qing Dynasty. It's the largest imperial garden in China (double size of Beijing’s Summer Palace), construction spanned nearly ninety years (beginning under Emperor Kangxi in 1703 and lasting through the greater part of Emperor Qianlong’s reign). The Imperial Summer Villa often used as a de facto second capital as Kangxi set a precedent followed by a succession of other Qing emperors. In 1994, the Imperial Summer Villa became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
