De mijnen waren in bedrijf van 1971 tot 1981 en het was een van de modernste mijnen van Europa, gebouwd met voor die tijd zeer innovatieve criteria. Op het moment van de onderbreking van de mijnbouwactiviteit was slechts 1/3 van de afzetting ontgonnen, ondanks het feit dat er nog veel ijzer in de diepte aanwezig is, beschikbaar tot 250 meter onder zeeniveau.
