This tour takes you back to Johannes Gutenberg's time at the end of the Middle Ages. You will see an original Gutenberg Bible from the 1450s - one of the most famous books in the world - and a live printing demonstration showing you how it was printed. Afterwards, we will visit some of the most beautiful parts of Old Mainz including the famous Cherry Garden ("Kirschgarten") with its half-timbered houses.
Reichklarastrasse 1, Mainz, Germany
In one of the world's oldest museum dedicated to books, printing and writing, you will enter the high-security vault and get a close-up view of the Gutenberg Bible printed around 1450 in Mainz. Understand the impact of this masterpiece by the "Man of the Millennium". Another highlight is the live printing demonstration; sit down for 15 minutes and see how letters were cast and how pages were printed nearly 600 years ago by Johannes Gutenberg in his local workshop. See beautiful historic printing presses and learn about the many different aspects of the first generation of printed books.
Markt 10, Mainz, Germany
From the cathedral we will stroll through the nearby pedestrianised old town ("Altstadt"). We will wander around the magnificent cathedral square stopping at its colourful, ornately decorated old houses and the beautiful renaissance well. If we are lucky, we will also experience the traditional farmers' market which still takes place here every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday (until 14:00) as it has for centuries.
