Join a local guide who lives in Alexandria and has seen the ghosts. We are historians; so we don't dress up and tell slapstick stories - we have the research and receipts to tell the darker side of Alexandria history. There is a colonial guard, still watching out for George Washington. Soldiers who don't know the wars are over. Murdered ladies of the night looking for revenge down dark alleys. Wander quaint streets of Old Town Alexandria with cobblestone streets and gas lanterns with our professional historians to hear the stories of this pre-Revolutionary town. While family friendly, this tour is darker and scarier than our popular Ghosts of Georgetown tour.

This is the only walking tour led by the historian who helps care for the ground itself. David Heiby — public historian, superintendent of the complex's historic Presbyterian Cemetery, and creator of Gravestone Stories — takes small groups inside Alexandria's 13-cemetery, 52-acre landscape, where more than 35,000 people rest: George Washington's pallbearers, Revolutionary War patriots, Civil War soldiers, a Cold War Soviet spy, and the highest-ranking Confederate general buried in Alexandria. Every stop is grounded in original research and cemetery records — research cited by the Library of Virginia and foundational to the complex's National Register nomination — including graves rediscovered after nearly 200 years. You'll walk quiet lanes, pass gates most visitors never enter, and leave with the official companion e-book, free with every ticket. Featured in national and local press and backed by a perfect 5.0 guest rating, with group size limited for comfort and a better experience.

Common questions about booking Virginia experiences through SimilarTours
Private guides here are genuinely worth it - DC's history is layered and dense, and a good guide (especially one focused on Lincoln, military, or Capitol history) will explain connections you'd miss alone. Many visitors book half or full-day private car tours because the stories matter as much as the sights.
Private DC tours and plantation visits can fill up, especially spring and fall. Book at least a few weeks out if you have specific dates or want a particular guide - check before you go for current availability.
Technically yes, but you'd spend most of your time in the car. Each estate deserves 2-3 hours. Most visitors pick one or split them across separate days if you're staying longer.
Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are ideal - pleasant weather, fewer crowds than summer, and DC's cherry blossoms or autumn foliage are a bonus. Summer gets humid and packed; winter is mild but can be damp.
If you want to break from history and hit the water, yes - it's a different vibe entirely. Chincoteague is about 2.5 hours east of DC, so plan it as a separate day trip or overnight stay, not a quick add-on.
No - Metro (the subway system) is reliable for getting between neighborhoods, and most DC attractions are walkable. But if you're doing private estate tours outside the city, your tour operator usually handles transport.
Usually a knowledgeable guide and transportation by private car, plus access to public monuments and exteriors. Some tours include entry to paid sites like the Capitol, but check your confirmation - admission fees vary.

Virginia pulls serious history buffs. Washington DC sits at the heart of it - visitors book private car tours retracing Lincoln's steps, exploring Capitol Hill, visiting the monuments, and diving into Marine Corps history. Beyond the capital, Mount Vernon and Monticello draw those keen on founding fathers' estates. If you want to flip the switch, the Jersey shore and Chincoteague Island offer boat rentals and coastal getaways. Most people mix a few days of guided DC tours with either a plantation excursion or water-based escape.
