Vail Village looks like a picture-perfect alpine retreat – all Bavarian chalets and polished luxury – but the real stories are hidden in plain sight. On this self-guided audio tour, you’ll hear about the soldiers, ski legends, and local quirks that shaped this mountain town into something far more interesting than its postcard image suggests. You’ll start at the Vail Village Welcome Center near the Colorado Snowsports Museum, and make your way through the cobblestone streets of the village center. As you walk, you’ll hear stories about the 10th Mountain Division soldiers who fought in World War II and returned to build Vail from scratch. The tour ends at a second covered bridge over Gore Creek, surrounded by sculpture gardens and mountain views.

Common questions about booking Vail experiences through SimilarTours
Winter is obvious if you ski, but summer brings fewer crowds, wildflower meadows, and comfortable temperatures for hiking and fishing. Shoulder seasons (late September through October, April through May) offer clear skies and thinner tourist density. Check weather and trail conditions before booking outdoor activities, as mountain conditions shift fast.
Private car service is the standard move - roughly 2 hours depending on conditions. It beats airport shuttles because you skip stops and get door-to-door convenience. Book it in advance, especially during ski season or summer weekends.
Yes. A guide for fly-fishing knows the creeks, water conditions, and where fish are actually biting - you won't waste time guessing. For Leadville and Camp Hale history, a private guide contextualizes the mining heritage and military training past in ways you'd miss solo. Both tend to be half or full-day commitments.
Absolutely. Aspen is reachable over Independence Pass, Glenwood Springs is close for hot springs, and Denver works for urban breaks. Most require a 1.5 to 3-hour drive each way, so book private transportation if you don't want to drive tired mountain roads yourself.
Transportation, a guide, and access to the sites. Hot springs tours usually cover entry to the springs; historic tours include stops at key locations and local knowledge. Fishing trips typically include gear and instruction. Check before you go on specifics like meals, equipment rentals, or equipment quality.
Private transportation and guides book up quickly during ski season (December-February) and peak summer (July-August). Aim for 1-2 weeks minimum, longer if you have specific date requirements. Off-season, you can often book closer to your travel date.
Fly-fishing can work for kids with patient guides, though stamina and age matter. Hot springs trips and scenic drives are accessible for most families. Check specific tour operators on age minimums, physical demands, and whether they've worked with children before you commit.

Vail sits high in the Colorado Rockies, best known for skiing but equally magnetic in summer when the mountains cool down and hiking takes over. Most visitors here arrange private transportation to and from Denver airport - it's a 2-hour drive and worth outsourcing. Beyond that, the real action is day trips: fly-fishing in pristine mountain streams, hot springs soaking near Glenwood Springs, historic mining towns like Leadville, and high-altitude passes that connect to Aspen. This is peak-season playground territory, where you're paying for access to altitude, solitude, and some of Colorado's most dramatic terrain.
