The Orcas Project is more than just a tasting, there's a real story behind every wine in your flight. We work with talented winemakers and vineyards across the Pacific Northwest, and each bottle features original artwork from local Orcas Island artists. So when we walk you through your flight, we're not just talking tasting notes we're talking about the vineyard it came from, the people who made it, and the artist who designed the label. It's a pretty cool combination, and there's nothing else quite like it in the region.

Common questions about booking San Juan Islands experiences through SimilarTours
Summer (June-September) offers calm water and clear skies for kayaking, sailing, and wildlife spotting - but it's also peak season. Spring and early fall bring fewer crowds and still-pleasant weather, though water temperatures stay cold year-round, so proper gear matters on multi-day kayak trips.
Popular multi-day kayaking expeditions and yacht dinner cruises can fill weeks in advance, especially in summer. Half-day tours and activity rentals offer more flexibility, but booking a week or two ahead is smart. Check directly with operators for current availability.
Yes. Guides know where orcas actually show up, navigate the ferry schedules, and handle logistics on multi-island trips so you don't have to. Even experienced paddlers book guided kayak tours - the local knowledge about currents, wildlife, and camping spots saves time and frustration.
Ferries connect the main islands, but they run on schedules that require planning. Most multi-day tours include water transport as part of the experience. Rentals (ATVs, kayaks) work if you're staying put on one island, but for island-hopping, a guided tour or private charter is more practical.
Absolutely - there are half-day kayak options and half-day sails designed for mixed fitness levels. Full multi-day camping trips work if kids are comfortable paddling and sleeping outside, but check with tour operators on age and fitness requirements before booking.
Waterproof layers (it's cool and often damp), a good rain jacket, and water shoes are non-negotiable. For overnight kayak trips, tour operators typically provide tents and gear - confirm what's included before you go. Sun protection matters even when it looks cloudy.
Yes, but it's tight. Bellingham (1.5 hours north) is a better jumping-off point for most day tours. If you're starting from Seattle, expect 3+ hours of travel time, which eats into your actual experience time - an overnight trip makes more sense logistically.

The San Juan Islands feel like stepping into the Pacific Northwest's best-kept corner - a scattered archipelago where you're equally likely to spot orcas, old-growth forest, and fellow travelers who've ditched the mainland for the day. Most people get here by ferry or small plane from Bellingham, and once you arrive, the mix of activities tells you what matters: multi-day kayaking expeditions through quiet waters, private yacht dinners out of Friday Harbor, guided tours that connect islands you'd struggle to navigate alone, and smaller thrills like sunset tree-climbing on Lopez Island or wake-surfing on nearby lakes. Whether you're here for serious paddling or a half-day sail around Orcas Island, the islands reward both planners and wanderers.
