Common questions about booking Key Largo experiences through SimilarTours
Winter and spring (December-April) bring calmest seas and best visibility for snorkeling and diving - ideal if that's your main draw. Summer's warmer and less crowded, but afternoon thunderstorms pop up regularly and water conditions can be choppier. Fall sees occasional hurricanes, so many operators scale back in September and October.
Popular private charters and reef tours book up weeks ahead during peak season, so aim for a month out if you're traveling December through April. If you're going in summer or fall, a week or two usually works. Check before you go - availability shifts with weather and seasonal demand.
Most private snorkel charters you'll find here include masks, fins, and snorkels in the price. A few basic operators might charge extra, so confirm when booking. Gear's usually well-maintained on established outfits.
You'll want wheels to get around town - it's strung out along the Overseas Highway and not walkable between lodging, restaurants, and launch points. Taxis and rideshares exist but are pricier than elsewhere in Florida. Most charter operators have parking or can direct you to nearby lots.
If you have your group together, a private fishing or snorkel charter gives you flexibility on timing and destination - you're not stuck to a set itinerary. Group tours are cheaper per person but move at the slowest swimmer's pace and follow fixed routes. For families or friends wanting to maximize your time, private often pays for itself in freedom.
Most reef dives require PADI certification. You can get your open water license through a course here - several operators offer them - which takes a few days. If you want to dive immediately without certification, check if any shops run beginner-level boat dives with instructors in the water.
Snorkeling and sandbar tours work well for kids old enough to swim and comfortable with a mask. Some charters take children as young as 3-4 on calm days, though sea conditions vary - rough water can make a boat ride miserable for small ones. Fishing charters are also kid-friendly if they're patient and interested. Always confirm age and swimming ability requirements when you book.

Key Largo sits at the threshold of the Florida Keys, where shallow reefs and sandbars meet gin-clear water. Most visitors here book water-based activities - fishing charters, snorkeling trips, and scuba dives dominate the calendar. You'll find yourself on private boats heading to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park or anchored over reefs teeming with fish and coral. A few people take PADI certification courses before diving. The rhythm here is simple: mornings and afternoons on the water, evenings on solid ground.
