Launch from our downtown Ketchikan dock aboard your own Zodiac Boat, just a couple minutes away from the cruise docks. Follow your guide and explore the Inside Passage of Southeast Alaska. Most tours take in views of Historic Creek Street, the Totem Poles at Saxman Native Village, and cruise the Tongass Narrows searching for bald eagles, seals and sea lions and often humpback whales and sometimes migrating pods of Orca! Enjoy zipping across the water with the salty breeze on your face. Every tour pace and route varies, but most tours stop and raft up with the guide boat 3 or 4 times during the tour. Waterproof Bibs, Jackets, Boots, Gloves & Dry Bags provided for the adventure. This is a guided, self driving excursion on the water. Up to 4 guests may be in each vessel. If you are a couple you may be paired with another couple on the tour. We provide the opportunity for our groups to have up to 2 guests per boat to have time to drive on the tour if desired. This trip puts a rod in every guest’s hand and gives you a crack at whatever species catch the scent trail your guide sets up on the bottom. This is an intimate fishing experience with 5 or 6 guests and a guide tucked into a hardtop aluminum cabin cruiser out on the halibut flats. Weather can be unpredictable, but a major advantage of fishing the Inside Passage is that there’s almost always a place we can hide behind an island, sheltering us from weather blowing in from the open sea. At our company, we don’t worry about fuel burn. We want our guides to go where guests have the best chance at the most active fishing. Compared to most half-day charters in Alaska, these trips will carry guests farther into more distant and productive waters. That means a better chance at the fish, more coastal scenery, and a better chance at spotting wildlife like whales, sea lions, and porpoises!

Common questions about booking Ketchikan experiences through SimilarTours
Summer months (May through September) are peak season for salmon and halibut. Book popular multi-hour fishing charters 2-4 weeks ahead if you're traveling during July or August. If you're flexible on dates, you'll have more availability and potentially better pricing in June or early September.
Half-day trips (usually 4-6 hours) focus on one species and suit visitors short on time or new to fishing. Full-day combo tours tackle both halibut and salmon, give you more water time, and typically include more sightseeing. Check the specific itinerary before booking-meal inclusion and what's provided varies by operator.
Yes, if you want flexibility. Private fishing charters let you fish at your own pace, and private scenic tours combine shopping, wildlife, and meals on your schedule. The extra cost buys you a customized day rather than a fixed group route-most visitors here book private options, so it's the expected way to explore.
Many fishing charters include wildlife spotting since you're on the water anyway, and humpback whale sightings are common in summer. Some operators specifically market whale-watching alongside fishing. Ask the operator upfront if marine wildlife viewing is part of your specific tour.
No. Most charters welcome beginners and include instruction. The captain and crew handle the heavy lifting-you'll learn as you go. Mention you're new to fishing when booking so they set expectations correctly.
The town itself is walkable and compact. For wider exploration, most visitors rely on tour operators since attractions like wildlife viewing and serious fishing require boats. Check before you go for current taxi, rental car, or shuttle options if you want independent transport.
Waterproof jacket, layers (it's cool on the water), sunscreen, and seasickness medication if prone. Operators typically provide fishing gear and safety equipment. Ask your specific tour operator what's included and what you need to bring.

Ketchikan is Alaska's salmon capital, where fishing and wildlife watching define the visit. You'll find serious anglers booking full-day halibut and salmon charters, while others combine scenic boat tours with whale sightings and stops at local shops and restaurants. Private tours dominate here-whether you're hiring a guide for a 6-hour custom adventure, a focused 4-hour fishing trip, or a minibus excursion that blends land and water. Most visitors come between May and September when the fishing peaks and marine life is most active.
