Ragusa earned the name of UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its Baroque heritage. This city hides a very long history that is shown not only by both prehistoric necropolis and paleochristian catacombs but also by its medieval ruins, that are part of its baroque dwellings and churches. However, the contemporary history of Ragusa is quite charming as well. Many prestigious representatives of the early twentieth-century architecture have contributed to the artistic decoration of the city. For instance, Ernesto Lapadula e Ugo Tarchi, just to mention a few, left their signatures on the most important buildings in Ragusa.

Noto:Noto is one of the most beautifully-built towns in Europe and this remote little place comes out in the memory like Würzburg or Nymphenburg as one of the finest achievements of the age which produced Mozart and Tiepolo. Its twine of restricted alleys discloses wonderful Baroque buildings and churches, which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Scicli:the pearl of Hyblaean Baroque, is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is dominated by three hills on whose tops you can admire the Convent of Saint Mary of the Cross and Saint Matthew’s Church. The sides of these three rocky acropoleis are tied up like a nativity scene thanks to peculiar dwellings. The cliff faces are also characterised by rocky dwellings as shown in the exemplary area of Chiafura. After the 1693 earthquake, the town was moved to the valley and centred in the area between via Mormino Penna and Saint Bartholomew’s Church, where all the extraordinary late Baroque buildings, which render the town of Noto Valley unique, meet.

Cicero described Syracuse as the greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of all (Verrine, II, IV, 117). Established in 733 BC by Corinthian colonists, Syracuse played a starring role in Mediterranean history, becoming the political and cultural heart of Sicily until the Arab conquest in 878 AD
