Palmela Castle stands on one of the highest points of the Arrábida region, offering spectacular views over the Setúbal Peninsula. During the Christian Reconquest, it became an important defensive stronghold and was granted to the Order of Santiago in the 12th century. The castle was later restored and expanded by Portuguese kings, serving as the headquarters of the Order of Santiago from 1443 until the dissolution of the religious orders in 1834.

The Livramento Market was inaugurated in 1930, replacing an older market that had been demolished in 1876. The Christ the King Monument (Cristo Rei) is one of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks. Its construction was inspired by a vow made by the Portuguese bishops in 1940 to build a monument dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus if Portugal were spared from the devastation of World War II. As Portugal remained neutral throughout the war, a nationwide fundraising campaign was launched, leading to the inauguration of the monument in 1959. Standing 113 metres high above the Tagus River, Cristo Rei offers breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views over Lisbon, Almada and the surrounding region. At the base of the monument, within its four pillars symbolizing the four cardinal points, visitors can find the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace, reinforcing the monument’s message of faith, gratitude and peace.
